H.264 vs. MPEG4
Hi Guys,
I'm trying to understand the benefits of using the H.264 encoder.
For this purpose I use as an input an .avi file received from Sony MiniDV camcorder.
I encode it using both H.264 and MPEG4, with same bitrate anf fps.
Although the quality of H.264 looks better, the size of H.264 output file is always larger than the one of MPEG4.
Why is it? Shouldn't H.264 compress better? You can say that if I raise the bitrate of MPEG4 to receive the same quality as H.264 low birate, I will see the difference in file size.
But not! It doesn't happen either! For example, 384kbps file encoded in MPEG4 takes less space than 64 kbps file encoded in H.264.
Any ideas?

As you may notice:
MPEG-4 encoded at 207 Kbps while the H.264 is encoded at 4301 Kbps
the ratio is 4301/207 = 20.77
MPEG-4 filesize is 216 Kb while the H.264 filesize is 4.4 Mb (4400 Kb)
the ratio is 4400/216 = 20.37
for a 20 times larger Vbitrate, the filesize is 20 times bigger.

Your explanation is clear.
But what remains unclear is why has the bitrate in H.264 encoding grown to 4301 kbps while I chose only 64 kbps?? You probably could see it in the settings file.
