Hi
I'm new to Super. I love this little program but need help.
I have a huge MP2 High Def movie collection in my hard drive(s)
I want to convert my High Def MP2 video with AC3 audio movies to a format that I can play in Media Center (WMP).
I want to decrease the file size while maintaining high video and audio quality
I need to know which format will yield the fatest conversion and keeping high quality.
I experimented with MP4 video and AAC audio and was able to convert a 8Gig video to about 1.9Gig. Look and Soud OK, but am not sure if I lost audio quality bescause of AAC. I know that AC3 audio will increase the file size, but I'm willing to trade.
I am now experimenting with AVI and AC3; the file has not yet finish encoding
PS. I am not encoding the audio portion, just the video.
Is there a matrix available that will show me the best conversion that I should use base on my 2 requirements? (save hard drive space & maintain quality)
I appreciate any input I can get
This is a typical file that needs to be converted

drag & drop your input file in SUPER(C),
select AVI as output container
leave all other settings by default
hit encode
the rendered AVI file playable on WMP will have a great quality

Thanks for your prompt reply
I will try it when I get home this evening before experimenting with other settings.
I have a few more questions and hope that you do not mind answering them.
When I chose AVI container, the dafaulted Output Codec is MP4 - I wanted to use H.264/AVC to get a smaller file size with great quality. Can you please advise me on what file size & PQ to expect (ball park) by choosing MP4 over H.264.
By the way I have CoreAVC 1.6 Codec installed on my HTPC and when I use Super to encode a file, the CoreAVC codec un-registers itself and I must re-register it after using Super to encode a file. Not sure why is occurs???
The defaulted Frame/Sec for AVI container is 25, I read somewhere that I should match my input file which is 29.97 - I also read by not matching the input frame rate, I risk having audio synch issue.
The defaulted Bitrate is 1248, I also read somewhere that a value cl;ose to that of the input file should be chosen.
At what point does this valuie increase file size wuith no significant quality gain? I experimented with 2544 and H.264/AVC and thought the quality was satisfactory.
The defaulted Output Audio Codec is MP3.
I read that AAC offers better compression, less file size and better sound quality.
I really do not want to loose the original Dolby Digital channels and for this reason, I prefer to use AC3. I do realize filesize will increase with AC3.
But I do not know if it's a marginal increase or substantial increase.
I also want to keep 6 channels using AC3 intead of 2 channels with AAC
Finally, the default Audio Bitrate seems a bit low at 96.
Is it worth it to use a higher value like 160?
I already tried AAC with 192 and thought it sounded pretti good.
But then again I don't want to waste disk space.
Thanks in advance for all your help.
PS
I really like this program and wish I knew more what I was doing to really take advantage of all its features.

use the Other Opts tiny switch to encode a short sample of 20 to 30 sec for evaluation and comparison.
try all available video and audio codecs and find the one that fits best to your requirements.
there is NO general rules and what is best for me could be "not enough" for you.
that's the reason we provide all possible codecs, but also all encoders (ffmpeg, MEncoder, x264 etc..)
on a side note, 99% of the high quality torrent ripped movies available on the net are encoded in AVI[MPEG-4, mp3] video 1000 KBps audio 128 Kbps
they are easily playable on WMP, they aren't CPU/RAM eater like the H.264 and they play on many available portable devices as well..

OK
I will try some other options.
By the way, as I experiment with diferent settings sometimes the output file is only playable using the built-n player.
Thanks

the built in player has all built in decoders, in other words it plays any multimedia format.
WindowsMediaPlayer relies on DirectShow, it can ONLY play the codecs that have the
corresponding decoder filter installed on your PC, therefore it varies from a PC to another.
With WMP, if no DirectShow Filter installed on the PC means no way to play the specific file format..
and here's in advance the answer to the question that usually comes after..

You're the best, and thanks again for being so patient and most importantly, for answering my lamo questions.
I just finished reading another user's post and saw a similar post on why the file would not play without using a directshow filter. I will try installing FFDshow.
By the way ever since I installed Super (c) my coreAVC 1.6 is disabled or un-registered.
I need to manually re-register it if I want to use it.
Is there something that can be done?
But if I read the linked post correctly, Super (C) is all that I really need to view the converted flle.

I am not sure about this issue, try to rename the \windows\system32\CoreAVC.ax file
to \windows\system32\Core_AVC.ax then register it again

SUPER(C) plays the largest variety of multimedia files, not only limited to the converted files rendered by SUPER(C)
