Questions converting WMV to MP4/AAC (Analysis Included!)

Hi, I'm trying to convert a 21.9MB WMV file to MP4. It is going to be 176x144, 1:1 Ratio, 15 FPS, 250 Bitrate for Video, and HQ is checked. BTW, I am using version 1.811 because version 1.9 gets rid of the 176x144 option for MP4. Sound is on 22,050 for Sampling Freq, One Channel, and a bitrate of 64.

I keep getting this error MENCODER.EXE isn't working or something. I'm not even using Mencoder, though. What is up? I've played the File in Super and in WMP and it works perfectly.

A few questions, other than the main issue above: How can I find out the FPS of the film I am trying to convert? Should I set that as my FPS? I read somewhere that I need to halve it?

Also, is 3GP or MP4 better quality, for that resolution?

Is Bit-Rate important for something that small a size? For video and sound?

I hear you can set a custom resolution in version 1.9, is that true? Any loss of quality? Both screen resolutions are divisible by 16, btw.

What does this Aspect Ratio thing mean? I hear that 1:1 is good, but to me it says that it should be 4:3. Which is better?

Last question: What is the difference between Sampling Frequency and Bitrate?

I'm really sorry for such noobish questions, but I'm new to all this encoding thing. Thank you so much!

there was v1.811
then v1.912
then v2006.build.13 followed by v2006.build.17 and the current one is v2006.build.19
Obsolete versions are no longer supported for the simple reason that if they
were good enough, they wouldn't have neen replaced!

Please update, the solution to your problem is inside the update version.

ikjadoon wrote:

if you use same video codec, same audio codec, same bitrates and fps then SUPER(C)
renders the same quality because the 3GP is in fact an MP4 format.

ikjadoon wrote:

higher bitrate gives larger file size.

ikjadoon wrote:

The current version supports custom VideoScaleSize in DirectShow mode only
Any time you encode there's a loss in quality no matter what you do.

Which one is better a 4:3 screen TV or a 16:9 screen TV?
It depends on how the movie that you are looking at was initially shot.

ikjadoon wrote:

Last question: What is the difference between Sampling Frequency and Bitrate?

The first is an audible range parameter (what you hear)
The second is rather a parameter defining the Analog to Digital conversion
and how the converted data are stored into a digital file.

Re: Questions converting WMV to MP4/AAC (Analysis Included!)

Hmm...I updated the version and now I am having some trouble converting .flv files. It also is having some trouble resizing a MP4 file. It will give me a generic error:

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a286/ … RERROR.jpg

It does work with DirectShow disabled, but then I cannot set my screen size.

It can't be the file as I converted these files perfectly with version 1.811.

I have around 80GB of space and this is the exact same PC I encoded it earlier with, just with  version 1.811...

It can play the files perfectly, though.

I am trying to use these settings:

Format: MPEG4
V. Codec: MP4
A. Codec: AAC
Res.: 176x144 (Using DirectShow)
Max V. kbps: 96
Max v. Fps: 15
Stereo/Mono : Mono
A. Sample Rate: 12,000
Max A. Kbps:64

What could be the problem?

Finally, here are the analysis for the three files:

Wrong, it is NOT a generic error, it is exactly what it is saying:
you do not have the corresponding ActiveX filter installed on your PC
I am definitely sure that you do not have any DirectShow ActiveX filter installed on your PC
for splitting an MP4 container and for decoding/decompressing the H.264 video
codec.. (you need at least two filters) so, please uncheck "Use DirectShow" exactly as it is suggested.

For low resolution like 176x144, use the 3GP output container! 3GP[MPEG-4 ,AAC]
That's the main reason it has been created, 3GP is an MP4 for
low bitrate, low resolution files, designed to target mobile/portable phone/devices..

As for FLV in general, please search the forum for previous posts and read the difference between
FLV1 and FLV4 video codecs used inside the flv files..

Ah....I used 3GP, just with MP4 and it worked great! Thank you so much for all your help!

Re: Questions converting WMV to MP4/AAC (Analysis Included!)

Of course, more than 97% of all mobile phone manufacturers have implemented the 3GP format.
3GP is an MP4 with low VideoScaleResolution and low VideoBitrate.
any file with the 3GP extension can be renamed to the MP4 extension.

We have created special output containers specifically adapted
for mobile phones, so why all that hassle trying to figure something
that has been already implemented and fully tested by us.

Re: Questions converting WMV to MP4/AAC (Analysis Included!)

I learn something new everyday. So 3GP is built for phones, a reduced-MP4 so to speak. It can be simply renamed? Neat! Thanks!

How can we find out which ActiveX filter we need, or if we already have it.  Is CoreAVC, Haali Media Splitter (came in Matroska Splitter), and Matroska Pack enough for DirectShow ?

if you read this part of our main web page
http://www.erightsoft.net/SUPER.html#Avis
you'll find a free utility to enumerate all your installed ActiveX filters.

dwoods99 wrote:

......  Is CoreAVC, Haali Media Splitter (came in Matroska Splitter), and Matroska Pack enough for DirectShow ?

Oh No, it would have been so simple..

DirectShow filters are selected per codec and NOT per file format or
extension:
VOB is a container that "generally" contain
a Video Stream encoded in MPEG-II format
an Audio Stream encoded in AC3
To play/read a VOB file with DirectShow you need:
MPEG2demuxer --> split the VOB in 2 parts Audio & Video
MPEG-IIdecoder --> to play the Video part
AC3parser --> to process the Audio
AC3decoder --> to play the AC3
Any missing one of the above 4 ActiveX filters will affect the reading or the playback

MOV is a container that is more complexe, it can contain
a Video Stream encoded in H264, SVQ1, SVQ3, MPEG-4, H263, Xvid etc..
an Audio Stream encoded in AAC, alac, ima4, MAC3, MAC, QDM2, Qclp etc..
that makes already at least 13 different codec!!
and 1 more filter for the Splitter to split Audio from Video .

MP4 is more complex

MKV is another story

AVI is even worse, as the same codec (for example DIVX) can be represented with diffenret fourCC

RealMedia has Real8, Real9, Real10 and a bunch of at least 7 different
Audio codecs

You still have to consider 3GP, VIV, WMV, ASF, OGG, FLV1, FLV4 etc.. etc..

If you want to count them all including the required splitter for every type,
you will end up with at least 400 different ActiveX filter.

Not to mention that a same ActiveX filter can be released by different author groups
like Ulead, Moonlight, Elecard, MainConcept, Ligos etc.. and 90% of these
ActiveX filters are commercial payable products that you need to buy.

That's the reason why SUPER(C) provides encoding in both modes:
If you have the ActiveX filter you can re-encode a file using the Directshow mode.
If you don't have the ActiveX filter, you can STILL re-encode WITHOUT the DirectShow mode (a bit slower)
