Encoding mpeg2-ts to edit with. What's best quality, bar none?

Hi,

Thank you for Super (c), it's the answer to 12 months of hell. A Godsend.

I have a JVC GR-PD1 camcorder. It uses its own format, mpeg2-ts, which not much can read. The footage is almost HD, but not quite. In fact, because the dumb machine won't send anything higher than 720x586 down the firewire, much of it's extra resolution is wasted anyway. But I digress...

It's 25fps, progressive scan, 18,000 bitrate, in true 16:9, 384kps 48000 mp2, so it's got plenty of info in the file. The info analyser reckons it's mpeg1-ps and it could be 50fps with each frame shown twice, not sure on that.

Super (c) reads it no problem and various encodes (VOB, h.264, etc) all work fine, but on my crappy 17" monitor I can't quite tell which is closest to the original (a good problem to have), but more importantly, which will play and look best on DVD and a big TV. (PAL, btw.) The automatic 'to-DVD' settings don't like the weird format.

It likes 720X576, forced 16:9, all the numbers maxed and unchecking the deinterlace. But which format is really keeping the most info I can't tell. Any thoughts much appreciated. Not fussed about encoding speed or size of files, I just want to salvage as much quality from the originals as possible. Quality, quality, quality.

And you should see the .m2t turned into Sony Ericsson 3Gp, mpeg-4, 25fps, forced 320x176 widescreen at bitrates of 528 and 96 stereo, running on a K800i. Flawless. This converter is unbelievable.

AMD 64 3.2, Geforce 6800 (no native h.264 - dunno if it matters), gig of ram, big enough HD. VLC player + Super (c). Single-layer DVD burner.

Use the H.264 video codec to render an output inside MP4, MOV or even AVI
If, as you said your originals are m2t, then their VideoBitrate is ~19000 Kbps
(compared to 9800Kbps for a DVD) so use something around ~5000 Kbps.

Many thanks, Mr Crypt. I'd guessed it might be h.264 and AAC, seeing as they're the most advanced and have more info for the same bitrates. Just a couple more questions:

Does it matter whether I choose mp4, mov or avi?

And bitrates; Is there no point going over 5k or so for the video? The DVD burner (DVDit 6) can't or won't read VOB conversions straight from Super (c) so I have to transcode twice (m2t to whatever to DVD). I maxed it on everything.

MP4 & MOV are easier to play on VLC, SUPER(C), QuickTime and many other players.
Avi[H264, AAC] is a bit different as it depends on the selected fourCC.

If you have noticed, there's a specific output container in SUPER(C) labeled
vob (.TS to  VOB) which provide direct conversion without any loss when you choose VOB Free Aspect
.m2t and .ts (HDTV) are very much alike, but the current version of SUPER(C) doesn't
auto-recognize the .m2t extension name (but supports well the m2t format!)
You need to rename the extension of your file from .m2t to .ts
Drag & drop it in SUPER(C)
select the output container vob (.TS to  VOB)
select VOB Free Aspect
hit encode
you'll get a VOB file format without any quality loss that you can encode to MOV or MP4[H264, AAC].
BTW this VOB file can now be played on any PC VOB player..

Cheers

Mr C, I cannot thank you enough.

Last time I got this evangelical about a piece of software it was for Firefox. That's how good Super (c) is.

I'll spread the word, don't you worry about that.
