<title>Seagate plans SSD, 2TB hard drive for next year in Technology Exchange : Hardware Talk</title>

<description>Topic: Seagate plans SSD, 2TB hard drive for next year

Message: Seagate will introduce its first solid-state drive (SSD) storage and 2TB hard drive next year, said company CEO Bill Watkins. The company's first SSD product will be targeted at enterprises that need speedy storage and can afford to pay a premium for the expensive drives. Seagate has no plans to release SSD drives for consumers, as the high prices could deter them for the next few years, Watkins said in an interview.&#160; The release date and price information for the 2TB hard drive were not available. Seagate released 1TB hard drives, the Barracuda 7200.11 and Barracuda ES.2, in the middle of 2007.&#160; While there is no competition now between hard drives and SSDs, Seagate is thinking of going to SSDs in the long term to replace hard drives.&#160; &#34;SSDs are not price-competitive yet,&#34; Watkins said. The storage market is driven by cost per gigabyte, and though SSDs provide benefits such as power savings, they won't be in laptops in the next few years, Watkins said. Low-power consumption capabilities and high speeds make SSDs useful for laptops, but the cost per gigabyte won't come down at least for the next few years, Watkins said.&#160; &#34;If the cost per gigabyte comes down to 10 cents, maybe,&#34; Seagate will focus on SSD storage for consumers, Watkins said.&#160; A 128GB SSD costs $460, or $3.58 per gigabyte, compared with $60 for a 160GB hard drive, said Krishna Chander, a senior analyst at iSuppli.&#160; &#34;It will take three to four years for SSDs to come to parity with hard drives&#34; on price and reliability, Chander said.&#160; Besides price, other issues will keep SSDs from the consumer space, Watkins said.&#160; Users seek fat storage to carry data, and hard drives can store terabytes of data, something SSDs can't do, Watkins said. SSDs also have write issues, with cells in the drives deteriorating quickly and reducing storage capacity, a general problem that plagues flash drives.

<description>Topic: Graphics card problem

Message: I am having a problem installing a Geforce FX5500 AGP card in a Compaq Presario SR1420UK. The machine is an AMD 3000, 512mb Ram with onboard graphics. I have selected AGP/Onboard as the primary graphics in the BIOS but still no joy. With the monitor plugged into the card when I switch on the monitor works while its going through its POST, when it starts to load up Windows (XP) the screen goes black.Anyone any ideas from here?

<description>Topic: HDD failure

Message: Hi all,Please bear with me as I try to recollect all the events that led to hardware failure. I had a perfectly functioning PC when suddenly yesterday morning there was an error on start-up which said that hal.dll file was either corrupt or missing. I visited a few forums and one of the suggestions was to copy hal.dll file from Windows XP service pack Cd to local drive. Unfortunately I couldn't copy the file because it said 'permission denied' to enter the WINDOWS directory. Upon restarting the computer, another error came up saying 'Overclocking failed' and then it stated 'SATA device not found' for the primary IDE device but secondary IDE slave stated the hard drive name and disk space. On entering the BIOS setup it said that hard disk wasn't detected. I then tried to copy the RAID driver from the ASUS motherboard CD and tried Windows setup installation. It failed again and I now believe that my hard disk has failed. Please advise as to how to recover all my data from the hard disk and/or resolve the above issues. My computer details are as follows:- ASUS P4S800-MX SE motherboard- Seagate 200GB SATA HDDThank you.

<description>Topic: SATA problems

Message: I have been running my computer for about a year using IDE drives, decided to get myself a faster 250GB SATA drive a while back and installed XP on a 50GB partition, using the remaining 200GB and my 200GB IDE for storage, recently i've been getting the dreaded Blue Screen Of Death saying problems with NVraid (asus A8N-E with nvidea geforce4 chipset) whenever i copy data off the SATA or play games from that drive, so i thought i'd get a 400GB IDE and just forget about using SATA. The drive arrived and I was stupid enough to buy a SATA, but i've got it running now and its still bluescreening, this time only ever saying checksum not less or equal which i got occasionally before. i thought it was working OK whenever I ran the computer without the IDE but i'm still getting the problems, oh and the computer BSOD's before it even gets to windows if i have an IDE drive connected. Do I need a motherboard or a new hard drive? or have I overlooked something?

<description>Topic: CPU fan

Message: I have a dell demension 8200 computer. The cooling fan for the CPU died. When I got the new fan I went to install it and found that the guy I work with had already removed it from the computer. This fan slides into a duct that attaches to the back of the computer. Should the fan get air into the computer or blow air out the back?My second question is when the fan failed I received an the following message when I start up:Alert! Previous fan failure.strike the F1 key to continue. F2 to run the startup utility.I have gone into the startup utility and cleared the system event log several times but still get the message every time I start my computer. Any ideas how to get rid of this message?

<description>Topic: DVD Burner Problems

Message: HiI've been having longstanding issues with burning dvds with my desktop. I am using Win Xp Home. It pretty much started out when I got my machine brand new a couple years back, I had some issues burning to certain discs getting some funky &#34;power calibration errors&#34;. THe problems seemed to settle them out for a while, however, after having not burned any dvds for some time and trying to burn one, I would get a very bizarre result. The burn procedure would complete and show successful, however if I tried to verify the data burned it would always fail. This was due to corrupted sectors which I found using DVDInfoPro and the drive struggled to read those sections. After having tried numerous things including changes in burning software, firmware upgrades (also tried older ones), different media... I kept getting problems, so I assumed it was a hardware issue with my BenQ dw866 (I think, it was an 800 series from what I recall), especially considering the burner had given me some problems initially right from the vendor. So, I got the drive changed for a newer Benq Dw1620. However, I have the same issues with the new drive, whereby an image will burn successfully but corruptions will be present that will pose troubles when reading (both in standalones and pc DVD drives). At this point I am really unsure of what it could be? I was thinking it might lie in the internal cabling setup and which drives are running as a maser and slave, etc. but I really don't know enough to identify the problem. The problem has been present for quite some time now, but I am posting since I have several dvds taking up space on my HD which I am ready to burn. Can anyone help?

Message: Could be any of those. You might want to see if you can set a delay in reconizing the HD. Some motherboards have this for slow drives.
