Yep, directory submission is helpful. Directory submission helps in getting more backlinks; also it helps in fast indexing. When you submit your site in directories it helps in getting more backlinks & because of this search engines automatically find & list your site.

Hi,
I agree with cyrus, submitting your site to directories, blogs and so on is great way to get backlinks. You won't receive any traffic at all neither from directories.
Backlinks are great cause the more backlinks you have the better you rank in search engines. There is where the traffic will come from.

You submit your directories to major search engine for promotion.Your search results enhances the progress your website where as the pr shown determines the hits and visitors your website gets.

Ofcourse backlinks helps in SERPS, even though that is only one of the criteria. Submitting to search engines is a waste, but directory submissions do help in small amounts.
