Problem Converting DVD .vob keeping the ac3

What I would like is to convert a DVD .vob to and .avi using H.264/AVC with 5.1 sound using ac3.

I can convert the vob video to avi.  It looks great, however, when i use the default audio settings for 6 channel audio, I get sound but it sounds like the rear channels are on the left side of the speakers and the front speakers are outputing on the right side.  I was wondering if I am missing any codecs or something.  thanks for your help.

Re: Problem Converting DVD .vob keeping the ac3

The Audio channel distribution is not straight forward, it is not the same for AVI, VOB, MKV etc..
Besides, playing results may differ whether your player uses DirectShow or not.

Note that the difference would be very significant if for instance you play the VOB
with a player like WinDVD using its own AC3 codecs, then you play the AVI with
WMP which obviously uses a DirectShow codec.

In all cases, we try to transcode the audio channel to the same position,
I am unable to guarantee success of the audio channel positionning.
