W3Exchange / Best way to convert a DVD to multiple avi files?

Hello all,

I have many different anime DVD's and would like to convert them to separate 175MB .avi files (feel free to suggest the best codec for quality). They should be separated by each anime episode. The .VOB files do not directly correspond with each episode. For example: VTS_03_1.VOB does not translate into episode 3, but has part of episodes 2,3, and 4. I don't mind taking multiple steps to solve the issue. I'd also like to do this with freeware if possible and preferably just with SUPER.

I've been searching days for this answer and Google has failed me for the first time. Everybody wants to shout out how to convert multiple avi files to dvd's (no crap, that's simple) but nobody is mentioning anything about converting a DVD to multiple AVI files. Does anybody have any ideas or suggestions at all? Some sort of response would be encouraging.

I use virtualdub for avi/mpeg1 and virtualdub2 for vob/mpeg2
